We have a few times in our weekly schedule dedicated to doing freeplay. Every Monday, instead of doing choice time from 4-5 pm, we do freeplay and call it “Magic Monday.” And on Fridays, because school lets out earlier than the other days of the week, we spend some of that extra time doing freeplay. And finally, when the weather is too rainy and keeps us inside, we often have freeplay as an indoor recess option.
For our freeplays, we’ll offer a bunch of options for kids to choose from. They can draw, write, play games, and build. Definitely one of the most popular freeplay options for both second and third graders is playing with Legos. We don’t allow children to save their Lego projects because then we wouldn’t have enough Legos left for the other groups and children to play with. We offer that teachers can take pictures of their projects and send those home for the kids to remember their imaginative work.
This is my collection of photos taken at freeplay in September in the second grade classroom. I’ll post the third grade photos in a separate post, just because there are so many. And I’m sure that this will become a monthly installment of primarily Lego photos to share with you all.
